Sonya Ivanoff

Sonya Ivanoff was found shot and killed and naked in an abandoned gold mine with one sock on her foot. Matthew Owens, an officer with the Nome police department, was on duty at the time of Ivanoff’s disappearance. Two years later, he was found guilty and was sentenced to 101 years in prison. Alaska, during the 80’s became known as the “crazy 80’s” because of the massive amount of serial murders. Notable cases include; Robert Hansen “The Butcher Baker” killed 17 in Anchorage (1971-1982); Thomas Richard murdered 5 in Fairbanks (1979-1981); Charles Meach 4 murders in Anchorage (1982); Louis Hastings killed 6 in (1987); and Michael Silka 8 killed (May 1984).
